Cola soft-drinks are carbonated beverages made with sweeteners and, usually, caffeinated. The first cola drink was produced by the pharmacist John Pemberton, a famous figure world-wide thanks to the invention of Coca-Cola and its brand. Originally, the beverage contained lime, cinnamon, coca leaves and the seeds of a Brazilian shrub. It was used as a medical elixir, a medicine.
Nowadays, and despite its name, the main cola ingredients are sugar, citric oils -oranges, limes and lemon peel-, cinnamon and vanilla, in addition to coloring and preservatives. Besides, each cola manufacturer adds its own ingredient, lending a personal touch to their soft-drink. Some recipes are considered, in fact, huge secrets among the industry. That is the case of Coca-Cola, for example.
Most famous Cola brands around the globe are Pepsi, Coca-Cola and RC Cola, but there is a great variety of regional brands and products, that, sometimes, surpass the sales of the multinationals on their local markets. That's the case of Inca Kola in Peru, Tropicola in Cuba and King Cola in Venezuela. Moreover, both Red Cola and Dr. Pepper are well-known in Mexico.
